Title: Tasmanian Stichtite
Medium: Digital Photography
Photographer: Aaron J. Greenblatt
Camera Type: Panasonic DMC-LZ7 Lumix 7.2 MP
Editing: Edited in PhotoShop 7.0 for color accuracy, size, and to apply copyright and border.

Location: Photograph taken during the 34th Annual Gem, Mineral & Jewelry Show hosted by the Macomb County / Mount Clemens Gem & Lapidary Society at the Roseville Recreation Center, 18185 Sycamore road, Roseville, Michigan on April 22nd, 2011.

Description: Sitting in a tray on a dealer's table were these cabochons made out of the mineral stichtite (the purple color) and serpentine (the greenish-yellow color) from Dundas, Tasmania. This material was found at a place appropriately called Stichtite Hill. The largest cab was more than three inches in length. The price of these cabochons varied from $20 to $40 each and was based on the size, shape, and aesthetics of the stone's patterns and color.

About Stichtite: Stichtite is a rare mineral - specifically a carbonate of chromium and magnesium that grows as trigonal crystals. It is formed as an alteration product from chromium containing serpentine. Its chemical formula is Mg6Cr2CO3(OH)16·4H2O and its hardness is only 1½ - 2, making Stitchtite a very soft mineral.

Stichtite's color ranges from pink through lilac to a rich purple. It is collected as a mineral specimen and is only used as an ornamental stone. It was discovered in 1910 in Western Tasmania, Australia, and was first recognized by A.S. Wesley, who was a former chief chemist with the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company. Stichtite is named after Robert Carl Sticht, who was the manager of the mine when this mineral was found.

such an unusual colour combination, I just might try it in my next painting :)
