Description: This is a closeup photograph of one of the most incredible displays of crystals that I have ever seen. What you are looking at is a pile of "Herkimer Diamonds" which are double-terminated quartz crystals. This collection belongs to the Kapelewski family who have been collecting them since 1959.
This closeup view shows you an exquisite sparkling pile of Herkimer Diamonds. If I had to guess, I would say that in this pile there are probably several thousand individual crystals. Many of these crystals are found as floating crystals inside cavities within their host rock. This picture does not even begin to do this brilliant pile of light any justice. To see this in real life was incredible.
The crystal cluster in the back on the right is called the Black Druzy and it is one of the finest Herkimer Diamond crystal clusters ever found. Due to the sparkling pile of Herkimer Diamonds in front of it, the Black Druzy looks rather dull in this picture. Then again, if the Sun were behind this brilliant pile of crystals it too would probably look dull in comparison. This crystal pile really was that brilliantly bright and sparkly.
