Title: Glass Cabs
Medium: Digital Photography
Photographer: Aaron J. Greenblatt
Camera Type: Panasonic DMC-LZ7 Lumix 7.2 MP
Editing: Edited in PhotoShop 7.0 for color accuracy, size, and to apply copyright and border.

Location: Photograph taken at the 2008 Spring Bead Bonanza Show in Southfield, Michigan.

Description: These mostly green, white, and blue cabochons were for sale at the show. Usually the piles of cabochons I comes across are a rainbow of colors but that wasn't the case with this pile. I imagine that most of these pieces came from the same glass source since their colors match each other so well. Often, glass cabs are made out of waste or excess glass - which accounts in part for why they're usually sold in rainbow-colored piles. Perhaps someone somewhere broke a considerable amount of blue, green, and white glass, hence the reason for so many like-colored pieces.

These cabochons are good for wire wrapping. Because they don't have a standardized shape, placing them into a standardized metal mounting isn't possible. So a custom mounting would have to be made for each one. Personally, I think that sounds like too much work. If I were into wire wrapping, I'd seriously consider purchasing some of these glass cabochons. They're not very expensive and they come in some great colors.

About Cabochons: The cabochon shape is usually a convex top with a flat bottom. Cutting "en cabochon" is usually applied to opaque gems, while faceting is usually applied to transparent stones. Glass will often take on a cabochon shape on its own as it melts. The usual shape for cabochons is an oval. However, just about any shape can be considered a cabochon if it has a domed top and a flat bottom.
