Location: Photograph taken at the 2007 Fall Bead Bonanza Show in Southfield, Michigan.

Description: These beautiful dichroic pieces were for sale at the show. They are made out of glass and each one has two metal loops - one on each end. These pieces were made in a kiln in a process called fusing. The bright colors you see are caused by metallic oxide coatings which have been applied onto the glass in various patterns. The coatings contain multiple micro-layers, with a total thickness of three to five millionths of an inch, which gives the glass its optical properties.

About Dichroism: A dichroic material (such as these glass pieces) is one which causes visible light to be split up into distinct beams of different wavelengths (or colors). The original meaning of dichroic, from the Greek dikhroos, two-coloured, refers to any optical device which can split a beam of light into two beams with differing wavelengths. Such devices include mirrors and filters, usually treated with optical coatings, which are designed to reflect light over a certain range of wavelengths, and transmit light which is outside that range.
